AITUTAKI
ACTIVITIES
On
Aitutaki, there is a lot to explore and do. Either ‘go with
the flow’, do nothing but relax, or create your own itinerary
from a variety of activities about the island and lagoon.
What
about a day on your beach, or on one of the 15 uninhabited islets
surrounding the mainland? All sorts of water and beach activities
are available. There’s snorkelling, reef walks, kayaking,
beach volleyball, jet skiing, etc. Scuba diving for the more adventurous
is a great way to see the colourful corals, caves and marine life
of the deep. Lagoon cruises or taxi drop-off to the islet of your
choice for the day is a must. Or just 'go with the flow' and sunbathe:
but do not forget your tanning lotion to beat the heat.
Fishing
charters can be arranged: either deep sea or lagoon fishing for
bonefish, parrotfish, snapper, trevally etc. Or fish right from
the beach: hooks and lines can be obtained from local stores,
or make your own from an ironwood branch.
For
those interested in a slower-paced exploration, a walk on Maunga
Pu, the island's highest peak for a rewarding bird's eye view
of our beautiful is recommended. Motorbikes and 4x4's will get
you to a certain point, then the remaining 100m to the top is
by foot. There are many tracks all over the Island, each track
leading back to the main road: not much chance of getting lost!
Another
landmark not to be missed is the huge ancient coral and lime church
built after the first Christianity receivership in the Cook Islands
by LMS missionary John Williams. Not only the thrill derived from
the architectural structure but also the Sunday church services
beginning at 10am which includes a unique style of singing traditional
hymns, not heard in any other part of the world. Complementary
refreshment is served afterwards.
There
are a handful of restaurants and bars on the Island should you
decide to dine out that offers a wide variety of mouth-watering
cuisine, including our traditional roast (umu). All Island Nights
includes lively cultural dance entertainment followed by local
band. Usually, on the last note, the guests or dinners are given
the opportunity to shake their hips; the latter has always been
one of the highlights of the show.
To
keep in touch with loved ones at home, the Internet Lounge offers
competitive Internet service from 8am to 12am weekdays, except
for Sundays 6pm to 12am. Also available are phone cards/prepaid
cards/stamps/post cards/postal box/photocopying/assorted beverages/cappuccinos/etc.
